Ion Frigates are great when you need firepower fast, but in longer battles, frigates tend to die. Alot. Solution? Destroyers. Fast, maneuverable, and packing some serious firepower, the Destroyer can really dish out the punishment. Not only do they combine the firepower of two Ion frigates and an assault frigate, but they have almost as much armor as all three combined, which can be a serious problem if you don't have any Ion units of your own.

Formations:
In games where unit caps are on, you will never have more than 6 of these at a time, and usually less than that in a single battle group, so formations aren't quite as important as they are with Ion Frigates, However, You quite often have these and your ion frigates in the same group, and in this case the same rules apply: larger goups should be placed in Sphere formation to maximize firepower while minimizing casualties.

Tactics:
Given their mass, Destroyers are surprisingly maneuverable, so use that ability. Give your Destroyers movement orders while they attack a target. Move them around the target, move up and down. Don't stay in one spot too long. Even better, shift each destroyer separately, so you'll expose your enemy's soft white underbelly, glistenting and ready to be sliced by your dual Ion beams of doom...

Ummm... Yeah... Right. Anyways...

Alone, destroyers last a lot longer than Ion Frigates, but not too much longer. They still should always be supported by Support Frigates, Fighters and corvettes. Treat them with respect, and they'll serve you well.
