The Light Corvette

Fear me! Name = Light Corvette
Speed = 575 m/s
Cost = 135 RU
Time = 22 s
Drain = 6.14 RU/s

Combining low research time, fast build time, and an low sticker price, the Light Corvettes are your best bet for a fighter defense early in the game. Their firepower isn't anything to write home about, but their armor is far superior to anything that a fighter class craft will have on board. Even in small numbers, a medium fighter wing should beware of a group of these.

Formations:
Like all its siblings, the Light 'Vette varies its formation during attacks. Most of the time, the wing starts its attack in the standard formation, but once it fires the first volley, the units begin to circle their targets, continuously firing while strafing. This is NOT a drawback in any situation I can think of as it drastically increases their lifespan when they take on other 'vettes, or especially if some frigates suddenly make the scene. In general if I assign a formation at all, I prefer either Wall or Sphere. Sphere is excellent if you plan to take on frigates (A bad idea, but sometimes necessary). With their "altitude", or z component of their position being usually at a different value than the target, this will force the frigate to not only turn to get a bead, but pitch as well, which not only slows them down, but draws their attention from that wing of incoming bombers you SHOULD have sent in to save your 'vettes. :)

Tactics:
Its rare that I ever need to set my lights to anything other than aggressive, and I can't come up with a reason to do so. Whatever your choice, the lights can and will destroy almost all the fighters in the area given enough time. They don't lay as much damage as I would personally like, but the damage is more than sufficient to make swiss cheese out of any fighters nearby. The only 'vettes feared more than the lights are the Multi-Gun Corvettes. If lights turn fighters into cheese, the MGCs make them disappear altogether. And honestly if you have the technology available, MGCs are a better idea for taking out all those nasty swarms. Unfortunately, the research for MGCs takes a year and a day, so lights will more than make do until then.

Light 'vettes tear through fighters, but they need to keep an eye out for Heavy Corvettes. who's armor and firepower are much more powerful. And like all 'vettes, you also need to be wary of Assault Frigates and all of the SuperCap class of ships. The rotating turrets on all of these will make mincemeat of your shiny 'vette fleet unfortunately. Methinks its time for that Bomber backup fleet...

Multi-Gun Corvette

You Are Obsolete Name = Multi-Gun Corvette
Speed = 695 m/s
Cost = 225 RU
Time = 28 s
Drain = 8.04 RU/s

Have a Defender problem? "Get Multi-Gun Corvettes, Now With Faster Build Time!" I personally have been waiting for the 1.04 patch so I could bring my favorite corvette back into action. The Multis are the definitive Fighter-Killer. Not Defenders, not Missle Destroyers, not anything. Fear them. Alot.

Formations:
Like all 'vettes, they tend to break out of formation when fighting larger craft and begin circling their prey. When fighting other strike craft, as usual Wall is the optimal choice. They honestly do well in any formation, since their coverage of 78% (second only to defenders) allows them to hit fighters from almost any angle.

Tactics:
In smaller maps, you'll definitely want to build a fleet of MGC's as soon as they become available to you. Only slightly slower than a bomber, and faster than any other corvette, these babies are an excellent anti-vette and anti-bomber response team. Obviously Interceptors and Scouts by far outpace them, but their armor is so weak that if they enter an MGC's range to retaliate, chances are they won't leave. A wall of aggressive MGC's will really chew through some massive groups of fighters.

And they're not just for Strike Craft either! While testing, I had a group of 12 evasive MGC's run into one of the CPU's destroyers, and as you can see in this picture, they really tore through it. Granted it was the CPU and a human player would be far more difficult, but it demonstrates that a lone destroyer or a few unprotected frigates should be wary of an incoming MGC wing. And as powerful as they are, they also do an excellent job of destroying outlying resource operations in larger maps like Scattered or H. Arena. Send a dozen of these guys out backed up by a support frigate for fueling, and they're set to destroy his operations AND any retalitory fighter strike he may throw!
